Installing Kinect in Mac

The computers in Paja are Kinect-ready. You can plug your Kinect and start working. However, if you’d like to work on your own Mac, here is an amazingly simple way to install OpenNI and NITE framework in Mac environment. With this method, it is even simpler than that of Windows.First off, you need to have Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It does not work with Leopard.

There are 3 elements to install

  1. Kinect Sensor Driver
  2. OpenNI
  3. NITE

For step 1, dowload the Kinect Sensor Driver from this link

https://github.com/avin2/SensorKinect

  1. Unzip the file ‘avin2-SensorKinect-0124bd2.zip’
  2. Open Terminal
  3. Go into the folder ‘avin2-SensorKinect-0124bd2’ by writing into terminal
    cd /Users/yourComputerName/Downloads /avin2-SensorKinect-0124bd2/Bin/
  4. Then write into terminal
    tar xvf SensorKinect-MacOSX-5.0.0.tar.bz2
    and it will unzip it
  5. Then write into terminal
    ./install.sh

For step 2 and 3, download OpenNI_NITE_Installer-OSX-0.131.zip and then

  1. Unzip the file ‘OpenNI_NITE_Installer-OSX.zip’
  2. Open Terminal
  3. Go into the folder ‘OpenNI_NITE_Installer-OSX’ by writing into terminal
    cd /Users/yourComputerName/Downloads /OpenNI_NITE_Installer-OSX
    and then press enter
  4. Start the installer by writing into terminal
    sudo ./install.sh
    and press enter
  5. it will ask your password. type it the password and press enter. You will not see when you type but it types :)

Now you should be good to go!
